MERU TEMPLE
![]()
Pura Meru in Cakranegara was built in1720 under the instruction of Anak Agung Made Karang Asem. This Hindu temple, was built as a place of worship for Lombok`s Hindu followers, is an impressive example of the Balinese temple.
The temple itself has a series of three yards, lying from east to west. The yard into the west is home o the “Kentongan” or “kulkul” house, in which a drum or bell made of bamboo resides, ready to be struck in emergency, or during a holy ceremony. The middle yard contains two large halls which have elevated floors, upon which the offerings (sesajen) that are used during ceremonies, are placed. The yard in the east is home to the three “menu”(towering structures with many roofs) which symbolize the presence of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Nestled behind these soaring symbols are thirty-three “sanggar” (prayer house), squat construction with straw roofs.
