MENTARANG RESERVE
![]() A remote area of wild rivers, rugged mountain ranges, extensive forest, rare animals, and traditional cultures has been declared Kayan Mentarang Reserve. The reserve is in East Kalimantan, and borders the Malaysian states of sarawak and Sabah. The name comes from two rivers in the park, the Kayan in the south, and the Mentarang in the north. The World Wide Fund for nature is working for protection and conversatiuon to develope this reserve. It is 1.400.000 hectares and one of the largest areas of primery forest left at Borneo, and becoming one of the worlds great centres of biodiversity. The biological resources are impressive with 275 bird spieces, with 19 only living at Borneo, including seven kinds of hornbills, great Argus and Bulwer pheasant. Appromiximately 20.000 people from a dozen of ethnic groups know as Dayak live near the reserve. Stone tombs reveal the area was inhabited as long as 350 years ago. The Dayak people developed traditional management systems that helped conserve much of the forest and wildlife. To explore the area you will need at least one week to get a impression of the National Park.
