![]() The old capital city of Kutai Kingdom at the riverbank of the Mahakam river, situated only 45 Km from Samarinda and 130 from Balikpapan. The former Royal Palace ha s now become the Mulawarman Museum, where historical arts as Kutainese Cultural Art, Chinese porselein, and Dayak handcrafts could be found. After the end of Kutai Kingdom, the tradition of Erau Festival permanently held and existed, but now for celebrati n g the anniversary of Tenggarong town. Today Erau is a mayor event in East Kalimantan, held between 22 to 28 September yearly, followed by all of ethnic tribes of the whole Kutai Regency. The ritual programs with traditional arts, sport and other activitie s can be seen on the deepening ethnic. In the past this ceremony was held in the time of inauguration of a King or Prince or on the anniversary of a King in Kutai, when all of the ethnic tribes were still in the authority of the Sultan. In the idea of ethn i c it's self-mean while the contact between the King and citizen was harmony as a kind of spirit relation. Besides that there had been feeling of brotherhood, while once in a year the people shown the skill as proof that the people were always stand by pro tecting the King.
