BALIKPAPAN
![]() Once a tiny fishing vill age fringed by tropical rainforest, Balikpapan is now a booming oil town and port city as the major economic transport centre of East Kalimantan, with the second most busiest airport of Indonesia. The city has no central district, it just sprawls, expensive buildings are surrounded by trash piles and sewage ditches. The oil companies have recreation facilities but only for the employers. A one day visit will be enough to get the impression of the oil boom and Indonesian cultural cocktail.
